Neither Vita, Henry, nor anyone else saw the attack that left Raymond Carrion dead. Well, that’s what they all told the police anyway. Officially, nobody knew why Carrion had been killed, his lifeless body found on the shower block floor of the Metropolitan Medical Transient Centre at 2.10pm on 5 July 1998.

Unofficially, and truthfully, it was a racially motivated act of revenge.

Raymond Carrion was stabbed in the shower as payback for stabbing someone else in the shower. Carrion, 36, was originally due in court two days after his death, for the murder of Maurice Joseph Marsland, an Aboriginal man dubbed the ‘Eastern Suburbs rapist’. Carrion was one of three people charged after the convicted rapist was brutally beaten and stabbed on 13 February 1996 in Goulburn Jail.

‘I can remember speaking to the Goulburn superintendent straight after that murder,’ said Vita. ‘And it wasn’t just another death in the “Killing Fields”, as the jail was known at the time because of the murders that took place there every week. No, this one was something else. The super had thought he’d seen it all, but he hadn’t. Despite all the bodies, he said it was the most sickening thing he’d ever seen during all his years working in a jail.

‘Alan Chisholm was the man who responded to this incident and the body was just cut to ribbons. Marsland was a predator of the jail system and a thug. He raped people to get into jail and he also raped people in jail. He was a big, vile and violent man. Nobody liked him, especially the guards. Chisholm was a tough nut and didn’t like this creature one bit, but he said to me after finding Marsland’s body that nobody – even a rapist – deserved to be killed like that.’

And, it seemed, a group of inmates at Long Bay agreed.
